A
Pilgrimage to South India in 1845: Tiruvannamalai
By Francoise Boudignon
Translated by Elsa Van Den
Muyzenburg
This book, lavishly illustrated with black and
white line drawings by the author, was originally part ofa French series that aimed to teach French children of
around the age of twelve about different cultures. This
particular book was written to explain the Saiva culture of
South India. It takes the form of a fictional pilgrimage of a
Hindu family who travel on foot from their village to
Tiruvannamalai to attend the Deepam festival of 1845. All the
traditions of the festival, of Arunachala, and of the temple
there are explained in detail. This is a great introductory book
for anyone who wants to get a feel of what Tiruvannamalai is
like.
